Orlando Bloom, who made it big playing a pointy-eared elf in The Lord of the Rings movie series, turned 35 years old on Friday the 13th.

The British actor has come a long way since he first played Legolas in the Peter Jackson-directed film The Fellowship of the Ring in 2001.

Bloom would go on to play a major role in another franchise, Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean. He also starred in the hunkfest that was Troy, opposite Brad Pitt and Eric Bana, and Kingdom of Heaven with Eva Green.

His more independent films include Elizabethtown, opposite Kirsten Dunst. He most recently appeared in the action film The Three Musketeers.

Bloom will put the elf ears back on for The Lord of the Rings prequel The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, also directed by Jackson. The Hobbit is scheduled to hit theaters next December.

The low-profile actor is married to model Miranda Kerr. They have a son.
