“Outlander” Season 3, episode 8 was full of surprises — especially for Jamie and Claire. From interrupted intimate moments to kidnapping pirates, the Starz TV show certainly wasn’t lacking on drama this week. Check out all the surprises below:

Young Ian Praises Killer Claire Young Ian (John Bell) clearly doesn’t understand his parents’ perspective. He is delighted and proud to tell his parents how great he is at selling booze and how cool Claire (Caitriona Balfe) is for killing one of the men trying to blackmail Jamie (Sam Heughan). Claire has to quickly explain that it wasn’t in front of Ian and it was self-defense. It adds more tension to an already awkward reunion.

“Daddy!” Just before Jamie finally comes clean about his first wife, Jamie is cutoff by his stepchildren running in. “Daddy!” a little girl says. They’re followed by Laoghaire (Nell Hudson). The woman who once tried to have Claire burned at the stake is disgusted to see Jamie and Claire in bed together.

Jamie and Laoghaire have been married for less than two years, and they’ve been living apart for most of that time.

Jamie And Claire End Their Argument After getting interrupted by Laoghaire, Jamie and Claire have a screaming match. They’re both angry but their anger quickly turns into passionate, aggressive sex — until Jenny (Laura Donnelly) comes in to tell them they’re waking up her entire household.

Outlander 308 recap
There was tension between Claire (Caitriona Balfe, left) and Jenny (Laura Donnelly) in “Outlander” Season 3, episode 8. Starz

Jenny Doesn’t Forgive And Forget Jenny and Claire seemed to be on good terms 20 years ago, but things have changed. Jenny won’t even let Claire change one of her grandchild’s diapers. Eventually, she asks Claire for the whole story. Claire says she had a husband in the colonies and she had to forget Jamie’s family in order to make her new marriage work. She returned after he died to visit Jamie’s grave and was surprised to find him living. Jenny believes the story, but she knows Claire is still hiding something. She refuses to hug and make up.

Laoghaire Has a Gun The Scottish woman tells Claire she has to leave while pointing a gun at her. Jamie steps in front of Claire, and while Laoghaire is giving a passionate speech, she accidentally pulls the trigger. Jamie gets shot in the arm, and Claire has to dig the pellets out of him.

Laoghaire Was Afraid of Jamie Jamie couldn’t live with his second wife because Laoghaire was traumatized. He says that one of her previous husbands (she was widowed twice) must have abused her. He couldn’t bear to live with a wife who feared him, so he headed to Edinburgh.

Laoghaire Wants Alimony Despite shooting Jamie, she still wants money from him. With no proof that she shot him, Jamie has to give in to her demands. It’s a lot of money though, so Jamie decides to go back to Silky Island by the prison to find the treasure again and take more jewels to sell. Young Ian accompanies Jamie and Claire, who watch as he swims out to the tiny island.

Claire’s Fears While watching Ian swim, Claire admits that she isn’t so sure they were meant to be reunited. “I’m just not sure we belong together anymore,” she says. She liked Boston, and Jamie was apparently content with his life. Jamie says he’d rather be her husband. Jamie knows this isn’t easy, but he is sure they belong together.

Pirates Arrive Jamie and Claire’s conversation is interrupted by a big ship arriving at the island. The sailors kidnap Ian, who has the treasure chest, and Jamie and Claire can only watch helplessly.
