“Outlander” Season 4 ended with another twist that surprised even those who read the books. Jamie has not only been informed that he must hunt down the regulators, but he has also officially been given the mission to kill Murtagh in Season 5.

Claire actress Caitriona Balfe said the finale twist, which was not in Diana Gabaldon’s books since Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix) died in book 3, will deeply affect Jamie (Sam Heughan), Claire and the Fraser family in “Outlander” Season 5.

“I think one of the main focuses is going to be this impending, looming Revolutionary War — obviously Murtagh and Jamie are being tasked on opposing sides, and that’s going to have a huge impact on the family,” Balfe told Elle. “The war is going to put Claire and Jamie is a very precarious position, so how are they going to deal with that, and how is that going to impact their family? We’ve got a lot of interesting stuff coming up.”

Jamie has been assigned to kill his godfather, but that’s not going to be nearly enough drama for “Outlander.” There will be other family issues as Claire and Jamie adjust to life with Brianna (Sophie Skelton). Though they lived together for several months while Brianna was pregnant, there will be more growing pains as they settle into normal life together with Roger (Richard Rankin) and the new baby, executive producer Toni Graphia teased.

“It’s always been the two of them, they’re this strong couple that’s completely bonded to each other, and now they’re really a trio. They didn’t get to raise a child together and as you know with parenthood, once a child arrives, it’s a different dynamic,” Graphia told Variety. “Suddenly Claire’s loyalties are very torn. She’s actually lived with Brianna for 20 years, which is longer than she’s been with Jamie. So suddenly she’s torn between her husband and her daughter.”

“Outlander” Season 5 does not have a premiere date yet.
