A pet dog was allegedly beaten to death near a family’s property off County Road, Milliken, Colorado, on Tuesday.

The family’s pet dog, Cody, was found dead about 10 feet from their property. One of the family members, John Pipe, said the 10-year-old rescued Irish Wolfhound was allowed to roam around their property Monday, but the family became concerned after the dog did not show up in the evening.

Pipe said, “We thought maybe he just had some sort of accident. So we spent some time searching, and we searched into the night Monday until dark.”

The pet’s body was located Tuesday morning. It was allegedly beaten to death. Later, Pipe revealed that he had found Cody’s collar wrapped around a nearby pipe "like a trophy".

The Pipe family took the dog’s body to Milliken Animal Clinic for an autopsy, where the doctors confirmed the dog had died of external factors, as indicated by signs of trauma across its upper body. Police said they were unable to retrieve much evidence from the area the body was found.

Devastated by the dog’s death, Pipe said, “It’s just sickening and I don’t understand it. It’s just sickening. It’s been tragic on the family, going home and explaining to your son that (Cody) isn’t coming home tonight.”

Pipe’s seven-year-old son, Marek, said the dog would sleep with him in his room at night and that the dog had been there since he was born.

“He was a good dog,” Marek said, adding, “You wouldn’t imagine him running away or anything. He was a really good dog.”
