Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg announced Tuesday that he and his husband, Chasten, have become parents.

“For some time, Chasten and I have wanted to grow our family,” Buttigieg, the first openly gay presidential candidate, posted on Twitter.

“We’re overjoyed to share that we’ve become parents!

“The process isn’t done yet and we’re thankful for the love, support, and respect for our privacy that has been offered to us.”

Buttigieg has not responded to many requests for additional comments.

Buttigieg, 39, and Chasten, 32, have been married since 2018 and live in a 800-square-foot, one-bedroom apartment in Washington.

The couple, who married in 2018, had been wanting to add a child to their family for quite sometime.

"We're hoping to have a little one soon, so I have a personal stake in this one, too," Buttigieg said in April 2019. "We should have paid parental leave and find a way to have paid leave for anyone who needs caring."

They have even gotten so close that Chasten said that, “on multiple occasions, to shop for baby gear and discuss names,” but would end up not having success.

The couple has been open about their struggles to become parents.

“You think it’s finally happening, and you get so excited, and then it’s gone,” Chasten told the Washington Post.

He also said he would tell his adopted child, “We tried so hard for you. We waited so long for you.”

Buttigieg is the youngest person to lead the Department of Transportation and the first openly gay cabinet member. His political career took off after he served as the mayor of South Bend, Indiana, from 2012 to 2019.

Buttigieg's tweet on Tuesday received positive responses from public figures.
