  • Prince Edward and his wife Sophie joked they have no idea who Oprah Winfrey is and that she interviewed the Sussexes
  • Some Twitter users criticized the royal couple for their alleged jab toward Winfrey
  • Others defended Prince Edward and the countess, saying they were just joking

Prince Edward and his wife Countess Sophie's response when asked about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's interview with Oprah Winfrey has raised some eyebrows.

When asked by U.K.'s The Telegraph about the March interview, Prince Edward, the son of Queen Elizabeth II and the late Prince Philip, and the Countess of Wessex joked that they had no idea who Winfrey was or that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex sat down with her for a bombshell tell-all.

"Oprah, who?" Prince Edward was quoted by the outlet as responding. Sophie added with a laugh, "What interview?"

Sophie also defended Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, who reportedly asked Winfrey what she did for a living at Prince Harry and Markle's 2018 royal wedding in St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle, E! News noted.

"You know, if you're not into chat shows, there's no reason why you should know who she is," the countess said of the media mogul. "Certainly not in this country, anyway."

Prince Edward and Sophie's remarks sparked a debate on Twitter, with some criticizing the royal couple for the alleged jab.

"I've only ever seen chat show clips on YouTube occasionally but I've still known who Oprah is since a young age (also British). The jealousy, bitterness and delusions of this woman (who ironically no one cares about) are very real," one person commented.

"Wow. That sounds so snooty. Oprah is extremely famous, far more than Sophie is!" a second Twitter user added.

"You Don't know her but you know she does CHAT SHOWS? Believe me Oprah doesn't care," a third person wrote along with laughing emojis.

"This family proves time and time again just how out of touch they are with regular people (in the UK and elsewhere)..... I'd literally bet everything I have on anyone in that country knowing more facts about Oprah than they do of these two stage hands," another added.

Some Twitter users came to Prince Edward and Sophie's defense, saying that the couple was likely just joking and that the countess was simply defending the archbishop.

"She does know who she is, she was commenting on how the Archbishop of Canterbury wasn’t aware of who she was when he had been talking to her, why do people twist things," a Twitter user wrote.

"Why do people think because she is well known that all must pay homage to her? Some do some don’t. The Earl and Countess don’t. I don’t see why that is such a big deal," a second person commented.

"I’m aware of Oprah but I haven’t watched any of her shows/ interviews. She might be super famous in the US but she’s not that big a deal in the UK. She’s not a global star," a third user added.

"Good interview Sophie, you are lovely," another wrote.
