  • Prince Harry said there has always been a competition between him and Prince William
  • The Duke of Sussex believed the competition was probably due to the "heir and spare" thing
  • Prince Harry said Princess Diana would be sad about his current relationship with his brother

Prince Harry opened up about the rivalry between him and his big brother Prince William ahead of the release of his book.

The Duke of Sussex sat down for an interview with "Good Morning America" co-anchor Michael Strahan ahead of the release of his book, "Spare." A teaser for the interview was shared on Twitter, where Strahan confronted Prince Harry about referring to Prince William as his "beloved brother" and "archnemesis." The interviewer said Prince Harry used "strong words" before asking, "What do you mean by that?"

"There has always been this competition between us weirdly," Meghan Markle's husband replied. "I think it really plays into or played by the heir and spare."

A portion of the interview also showed Strahan saying, "so the heir was jealous of the spare." The statement raised the eyebrows of the netizens, with some claiming it was Prince Harry who was jealous of his brother, the future king.

"Jealous of the Spare, I think its the other way around, And Harry says it's the truth, is this his Objective truth or his Subjective truth, how he feels so no facts? I mean Telling William that he only believes that stuff about Meghan because of Tabloids. Really," one commented on the clip.

"We all once felt sorry for this guy. Not anymore. It appears that #PrinceHarry was always living in rage and jealousy of his brother, which is not understanding and not accepting his role and his duties. It's clear now that he always wanted to leave & have a life like Edward VIII," another added.

Another blamed the institution for the way it brought up the royal siblings. The netizen felt that it was the institution that pit them against each other, calling the monarchy an "abusive system that creates damaged adults."

In the same interview, Strahan asked Prince Harry what their mom, Princess Diana, would think of his current relationship with the heir to the throne.

"I think she would be sad," Harry said. "I think she'd be looking at it long term to know that there are certain things that we need to go through to be able to heal the relationship."

He added that he had "felt the presence of my mum more so in the last two years than I have in the last 30."

Princess Diana died in a car crash in August 1997 in Paris, France. In the book, Prince Harry also shared his emotional struggles following his mom's death.

Prince Harry's full interview with Strahan will air on "GMA" on Monday, a day before the release of his memoir, "Spare."
