Prince William recently revealed that he’s been through hell and back.

The revelation came while the Duke of Cambridge was talking to a barber about mental health. Ken Hermes, a hairdresser turned mental health campaigner, met Prince William during his visit to the Pall Mall Barbers. Hermes revealed that he was just 15 years old when he lost his father to suicide.

“It was the proudest moment of my life… When I told William my story, he was clearly taken aback. I told him, ‘Look, we’ve both been through hell and back but when you lose somebody to suicide it means you spend your life looking for answers,’” he told Express.

Hermes also said that he and Prince William talked about being parents and learning how to be more open with our children than our respective dads were with us.

“We spoke about the pressure of being dads. He said that we tend the father the way we’ve been fathered but that it’s important to break out of that cycle,” Hermes said.

Hermes’ dad was just 46 years old when he decided to hang himself in their family garage following a long period of unemployment. Prior to his death, Hermes said that he shared a touching moment with his dad when they talked about his life struggles.

After staying up late having a conversation with his dad and drinking beer, Hermes went back to his room and prepared to go to bed. As he was about to sleep, his dad went to his room to bid him good night and he also told him that loved him. According to the mental health campaigner, this was the last thing that his dad told him.

Following his dad’s death, Hermes struggled to open up about the pain of passing. But he soon realized how important it was to open up about his struggles and want to encourage others going through a similar thing to do the same.
