Fans eagerly waiting for “Darkborn” will be disappointed.

The Outsiders, who have been developing the highly anticipated horror game for more than four years now, announced that they are stopping the development of “Darkborn” indefinitely for unspecified reasons.

In April 2019, The Outsiders released a 16-minute long gameplay for the title, which was previously called “Project Wight.” The teaser undoubtedly hyped several fans of role-playing games, especially with its unique take in the genre.

“Over the past four years, we have been working on a game property we loved very much. This was once called Archenemy, became Project Wight, and finally Darkborn,” The Outsiders said in a statement posted on Twitter.

“Last April we released a gameplay trailer for Darkborn knowing that it might be our final release. In spite of our best efforts to continue, ultimately we had to make a difficult decision to halt development on the project.”

Players take on the role of a creature called “Darkborn” in the game, guiding the character in its escape from Viking hunters. Based on the gameplay trailer, players will have to rely mostly on stealth and the other unique abilities of the creature to survive and fight the hunters.

The fact that the game departs from the hero formula made it an instant hit, while its graphics and storyline added more to the hype as one of the most promising games in development.

Unfortunately, it is unknown how long it will be shelved or whether it will still be continued. However, the game studio is not entirely closing the door to a possible revival of the game sometime in the future.

“Perhaps one day we will return to it: we all hope so and genuinely appreciate the support of everyone who followed us over the years,” The Outsiders continued.

On the other hand, The Outsiders noted they are working on a new project. Nonetheless, it is unknown if the development of the new game has something to do with the indefinite postponement or cancellation of “Darkborn.”

Regardless, fans are hoping that it is not yet the end for the promising horror game. While history suggests it is unlikely to resume production, it could still be given another life, especially with the gaming industry seeing a massive boom in recent years.
