Queen Elizabeth II only invites one member of the royal family to her Scottish hideaway, and it’s not Prince Philip.

The monarch owns Balmoral Castle within the Balmoral Estate, which is about a mile away from the historic Craigowan Lodge, where Prince Charles and Princess Diana stayed during part of their honeymoon.

Her Majesty’s impressive residence boasts of seven bedrooms, and it is a spot that she goes to several times a year. While there, the Queen spends her time reading, writing letters, walking, and riding in the local area.

According to Daily Mail, the Queen enjoys her quiet days in Balmoral Castle and if she would invite one guest, she would ask her niece, Lady Sarah Chatto, to accompany her.

Chatto, 54, is the daughter of the late Princess Margaret and Antony Armstrong-Jones. She is currently 23rd in the line of succession to the British throne. Chatto is a non-working royal, and she works as a professional painter. She also happens to be the vice president of the Royal Ballet.

It is believed that the Queen is close to her niece since she could remind her of her late sister. The Queen and Princess Margaret were also considered to be close but they also had disagreements especially during the time that the latter got into an affair with Peter Townsend.

Several years ago, the Queen stepped in by helping the Queen Mother separate Princess Margaret from Townsend. The latter was sent to Brussels for a two-year engagement with the British Embassy in an attempt to quell the press interest during the alleged scandal.

Hugo Vickers, a royal historian, claimed that the Queen tried to accept Princess Margaret’s affair and was torn between exercising human sympathy for her sister and fulfilling her role as the Head of the Church.

Despite her efforts, Princess Margaret still developed negative feelings towards her older sister. During one interview, she blamed the Queen for not being transparent.

“Had she said we couldn’t get married, we wouldn’t have thought any more about it,” Princess Margaret said.
