KEY POINTS

  • David Dorn, a retired police captain was killed preventing a pawn from getting looted
  • Dorn's widow said that her husband was friends with the pawnshop owner
  • Four police officers were shot in St. Louis and another in Las Vegas

Davin Dorn, a 77-year-old St. Louis retired captain that became the police chief of a small town, was the victim of shooting early Tuesday (June 2). The fatal incident occurred outside a pawn shop, which was looted after protests over the death of George Floyd became violent.

Dorn was found on the sidewalk in front of Lee Pawn & Jewelry in St. Louis at 2.30 am. Police commissioner John Hayden stated Dorn had been serving as police chief of Moline Acres, Mo., and was killed when he tried to stop the shop from being looted.

Hayden claimed that Dorn was implementing law enforcement training he had learned there. He did not release further details concerning the incident, according to ABC News.

The widow of the deceased, Ann Marie Dorn, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that her husband had been a friend of the pawnshop owner and usually checked on the business when alarms went off. It is no wonder that he was on the scene when the looting started.

Police have not made any arrests and do not have any suspects as yet. The authorities did announce a $10,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest.

The Ethical Society of Police that represents black officers in St. Louis mourned him saying, he was the type of person that would have given his life to save others.

Dorn's death happened in one of the most challenging periods for law enforcement in the country, considering the riots taking place in large cities.

A police officer in Las Vegas is on life support after being shot Monday night, attempting to disperse a large crowd of protesters outside a casino. Another officer in New York City was attacked while four others were shot in St. Louis during George Floyd protests.

The four officers wounded in St. Louis Monday were shot near police headquarters, where the clashes with rioters lasted well into the night.
