“Riverdale” Season 1 cast member Cole Sprouse recently opened up about his character, Jughead, while at the Television Critics Association winter press tour.

The former child star clarified to HollywoodLife that even though Jughead labeled himself as Asexual in a February 2016-released comic book, his character in The CW series won’t be portrayed as such. “Jughead will have romances with women… and burgers, but at the end of the day, I still had to do my job,” he said.

Even though Jughead from the comics and the series won’t be 100 percent alike, Sprouse said that he wants the topic of asexuality to be paired with his character’s development. “Asexuality is not one of those things in my research that is so understood at face value, and I think maybe the development of that narrative could also be something very interesting and very unique and still resonate with people, and not step on anyone’s toes,” he explained.

Sprouse also told MTV News while at the said event that he would be more than willing to do whatever it takes for Jughead to be able to explore his sexuality in the show. “If Season 1 is one of those events or something like that needs to happen in Season 1 for Jughead to eventually realize that kind of narrative, I’d love to play with that too,” he said.

Meanwhile, a prequel comic book for “Riverdale” is set to be released on Free Comic Book Day on May 6. The comic book is written by series creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Brian E. Paterson and James DeWille. The book will chronicle the stories ahead of the events that will take place in the TV series. Specifically, the book will focus on Archie’s summer construction job, and Veronica’s mysterious life in New York.

“Riverdale” Season 1 will premiere on The CW on Jan. 26 at 9 p.m. EST.
