Riverdale” Season 1, episode 1 opens with Jughead (Cole Sprouse) narrating the events that took place over the summer.

Jughead is writing a novel about the goings-on in “Riverdale,” but he finds it a bit difficult to get the whole story because he doesn’t have a lot of friends. He’s seemingly depressed, alone, indifferent and mysterious so some of the things he writes are solely based on his observations.

One of the biggest stories he’s looking into is the shocking death of Jason Blossom (Trevor Stines). The latter’s sister, Cheryl, claimed that her brother died after drowning in Sweetwater River on July 4. But Jughead doesn’t necessarily believe her.

Majority, if not all, of Jason’s classmates are suspects in his sudden death. This includes lead character Archie (K.J. Apa) who heard a gunshot at the river the day Jason was killed. However, he cannot tell anyone about this because he was spending time with one of his teachers, Miss Geraldine Grundy (Sarah Habel), that time. Another suspect is Betty (Lili Reinhart) who is at odds with Jason for moving on with her older sister, Polly (Tiera Skovbye), after breaking up with her.

On top of being a possible suspect, Betty is also struggling with her feelings for Archie. Throughout the entire episode, she tried to tell Archie the truth, but she would always chicken out when the moment was right in front of her. When she finally told Archie that she loves him, Archie told her that he’ll never be good enough for her or her mom, Alice (Madchen Amick), who is a perfectionist.

Meanwhile, Veronica (Camila Mendes) is trying to be a good friend to Betty. When she found out that Betty got dumped by Archie, Veronica tried to be there for her. But Archie and Veronica shared a kiss at one point in the episode. However, this isn’t the biggest secret the latter is hiding. Mrs. Lodge (Marisol Nichols) found out that Veronica has an entire bag filled with money, and she has no idea what it is for.

“Riverdale” Season 1 airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. EST on The CW.
