“Scream 5” producers seem to be affirming the movie’s return and tapping Neve Campbell to reprise her role as Sidney Prescott.

The black comedy slasher film is reportedly coming back to the big screen. The “Scream” franchise main protagonist, Campbell, revealed that she had conversations with the film producers to star in the movie’s fifth installment as well.

In the 1996 “Scream” debut, Campbell, 48, played the high school teenager Sidney Prescott, who becomes a target of a mysterious and notorious serial killer dressed in a Halloween costume and goes by the name of Ghostface.

And during a “Five Favorite Films” interview with Rotten Tomatoes, Campbell dished on her talks with the producers and the film franchise’s release that is slated for 2021.

"We're having conversations. I have been approached about it," the “Wild Things” actress said.

With regards to reprising her longtime role in the “Scream” franchise, Campbell expressed how she grew to love her character and feels indebted to the whole movie’s entire run.

"I'm so grateful for these films. I love Sidney Prescott,” the 48-year-old actress stated. “It's always been fun for me to step back in her shoes, and it's always fun for me to see the cast come back and make one of these films again and try to make another good one."

The actress also added how the ongoing coronavirus pandemic is affecting the film production’s development. Though nothing has been outrightly finalized, Campbell, along with the film’s producers, are currently trying to reach a compromise for the upcoming “Scream” installment.

"The timing's a bit challenging because of COVID," Campbell shared. "You know, we only started the conversation maybe a month and a half ago, so it's going to take some time to figure out how it's all going to work out. We're negotiating, so we'll see."

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are the “Scream” franchise’s current directors. According to Campbell, both directors have reached out to the actress by penning a “touching letter” about the late former film honcho Wes Craven.

In the letter, the Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillet expressed how the late director was such an inspiration to them both and that they aim to honor him by planning to release a fifth segment for the “Scream” franchise. "That meant a great, great deal to me," Campbell said. "So, we'll see. Hopefully, we can all see eye to eye on the project and find a way to make it."

During a time where teen-slasher films were a predominant hype, the “Scream” franchise was first introduced by the late Wes Craven in 1996 merging themes of comedy, irony and horror that has drawn in audiences over the world. The horror movie mayhem became a smash hit, eventually producing four more additional segments to the film franchise.

Before his death in 2015, Craven’s film franchise also included prominent casts such as Courteney Cox, Drew Barrymore, Rose McGowan, David Arquette and Skeet Ulrich, People reported.
