“Sex Education” Season 2 kept Maeve and Otis front and center but separate. The two experienced some time apart, and star Asa Butterfield wasn’t thrilled about the break.

“We didn't actually get many scenes in Season 2 together, which was really sad,” the Otis actor told the Hollywood Reporter. “I'm hoping they write some more for us next year.”

However, it seems the actor isn’t sure if Emma Mackey’s Maeve and Otis are meant to be a romantic pairing. “Sex Education” Season 2 ended with Otis declaring his love for Maeve on her voicemail, but Isaac (George Robinson) deletes the message before she hears it.

Butterfield isn’t sure how their future will play out, but it’s clear that the teens have more maturing to do with they want a relationship to work out.

“They both have a bit of growing to do if they are potentially to become a couple. But, equally, I can see them just being good friends,” Butterfield told THR when asked if he ships Maeve and Otis together.

“I love Emma, and we all get on amazingly well. It's hard to put your finger on when you do experience that chemistry, but there are moments — fireworks, really — when you work with someone and it just feels right. Emma is so good at playing all of Maeve's different shades and also showing her vulnerability. Otis is one of the few people who can get her to show those cracks,” he noted.

Butterfield will return to the role of Otis in “Sex Education” Season 3. It seems as though he might have a long future playing the son of a sex therapist (Gillian Anderson). Netflix claims that the dramedy has attracted at least 70 million viewers to watch at least part of it. It’s worth noting that Netflix doesn’t reveal the numbers of those who view the series from start to finish.

“Sex Education” Season 3 does not have a premiere date yet.

Sex Education
18. "Sex Education" Season 2 (Netflix) - The first season of “Sex Education” was so beautifully rendered that adults could have learned so much from it. But season 2 is much more than just educating people about “sex,” it is about self-awareness, compassion and love. The best thing about the second installment is that not a single moment is wasted in meaningless conversations. Every single character is developed and gets equal screen time. This season’s storyline is all about girls who shine the brightest in this endearing Netflix series.  Jon Hall/Netflix
