KEY POINTS

  • The next step in the PlayStation 5's release process has arrived with Sony opening the registration for a chance to pre-order the next-gen console
  • With no guarantee that they will even be able to pre-order, invitations distributed are going to be based on “previous interests and PlayStation activities”
  • Available only for those with a U.S. based address, it still doesn't reveal the price or the release date of the PS5

The long and winding road to the actual arrival of the PlayStation 5 has reached its next stop with Sony opening online registration, but only for a possible invitation to be one of the first to pre-order the next-gen console directly from Sony.

There will be a “limited quantity of PS5 consoles available for pre-order” this holiday season, according to the announcement from Sony. The invitation program is a chance for existing PlayStation customers to get their shot at being able to order the upcoming console, reports The Verge.

To be clear, Sony’s FAQ page states that filling out the registration form does not guarantee an invite to be able to pre-order the PlayStation 5. Invitations distributed are going to be based on “previous interests and PlayStation activities.”

Should you get an invitation, that does not guarantee that you will get to pre-order the console. If you receive an invite and units are still available, as long as you ship to a U.S. based address, “your pre-order invitation will be allowed.” Any orders that contain a non-U.S. based address will be canceled.

Each invitation will be open for a limited time and has limits on just a single console preorder per PSN ID (along with two each of the new DualSense controllers and other PlayStation 5 accessories).

The items available for pre-order are one PS5 console or one PS5 Digital Edition, two DualSense wireless controllers, two DualSense charging stations, two Pulse 3D wireless headsets, two media remotes, and two HD cameras. With PS5 console pre-order reservations tabbed as first come, first serve, you will want to act quickly to make sure you don’t run out of units.

As exciting as this news is, it is still surprisingly short on some essential information that Sony has still kept close to the vest to this day, namely details on prices for the console and a definitive release date.

It’s pretty clear that Sony is still engaged in a cat and mouse game with Microsoft to determine who will blink first and announce these very important details before the other does. Microsoft’s Xbox Series X is, like the PS5, also scheduled for a holiday 2020 release but is also keeping everyone in the dark regarding its release date and price.
