On “Supernatural,” Sam and Dean having matching tattoos to prevent them from getting possessed. In real life, actors Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, along with onscreen dad Jeffrey Dean Morgan, have matching crown tattoos, but they apparently have a special meaning.

At a Toronto Supernatural convention last weekend, Ackles and Padalecki, who play Dean and Sam, respectively, explained how the tattoos came about. It was a spur-of-the-moment decision at Morgan’s wedding to Hilarie Burton. They had a tattoo artist at the reception and a small menu of designs. All three of them liked the Jean-Michel Basquiat crown, a design Morgan specifically requested to be available.

“I was like, ‘The crown’s kind of cool.’ And I didn’t know it was a Basquiat crown. I was thinking like, ‘Oh, I was king of Mardi Gras this year, maybe I should get the crown,’” Ackles laughed. “[Jeff was] like, ‘I’m gonna get that crown.’ I was like, ‘Oh, no way, that was actually the one I was looking at.'”

Morgan encouraged Ackles to get a matching tattoo with him, and then Padalecki came up to them while they were looking at designs. “Around that time, Jared walks up. He’s like, ‘You guys getting one?’ I was like, ‘Yeah we might do the crown.’ He’s like, ‘Well me too, I’m in!'” Ackles recalled.

“So now, you know, we’re the three kings, [that’s] what we call ourselves,” Ackles added. “But also, it’s actually a W for Winchester.”

Padalecki also appreciated that it reminded him of the William Shakespeare quote, “Heavy is the head that wears the crown,” from “Henry IV.”

“There are a lot of different cool meanings that just made sense. It was time,” the future “Walker, Texas Ranger” star said.

It was Padalecki’s first tattoo. Ackles previously tattooed a bird on his shoulder in honor of his eldest daughter, Justice Jay. Morgan has several tattoos and announced the matching Winchester tats on Instagram last week.

“Who knew getting inked up at a wedding was gonna be so permanent?...hahaha...wait what?” Ackles commented on the post.

“Family who slays together, stays together. #kongsforever #spnfamily,” Padalecki wrote.

The final season of “Supernatural” kicked off last week. Season 15 will continue to air on Thursdays on The CW.
