What is stomach bloating anyway?

This refers to the feeling when you eat too much food or a particular type of food. A bloated stomach would result in experiencing a feeling of discomfort. You may also notice painful abdominal cramps. In some cases, there is this stretching sensation in the tummy area.

Most of the time, bloating has been associated with eating a specific group of foods. At times, it is even hard to pinpoint which food you ate caused your stomach to become bloated.

What is the culprit?

Harvard Health stated that among the key culprits of stomach bloating is a specific type of food group known as FODMAPs. This refers to fermentable, oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols. These foods contain sugar that the body would find difficulty digesting. Because of this difficulty, it creates tons of problems, the primary of which is a bloated stomach.

What are FODMAPs?

Some of the foods that belong to the FODMAPs group would include rye, onion, garlic, wheat, legumes, pistachios, honey, cashews, artichokes, and asparagus. So if you easily get bloated, better avoid these foods. You may also want to avoid other FODMAP foods like drinks that have artificial sweeteners, including dinks that have high fructose levels.

Aside from the mentioned groups, you would surely want to cut down milk and other dairy foods. Aside from suffering from a bloated stomach, you may also be experiencing gastrointestinal distress.

When can you consider bloating to be serious?

As per Express’ report, Dr. Kyle Staller, a gastroenterologist from the Massachusetts General Hospital, experiencing a sudden bloating when you are already older may be more serious. It can even indicate that a worse problem is being experienced.

This is because normally, bloating is experienced at a young age. So when bloating occurs when you’re older, that may signal a worse problem.
