No educator wants to be in the middle of an active shooter situation with their students. However, since things like these are unpredictable and can happen at any time, it is always better to be prepared, as a teacher in the U.S. has demonstrated on TikTok.

The teacher, concerned about the safety and well-being of her students, recently shared how she prepared her class to deal with an active shooter situation. In a video posted to TikTok, the teacher explained she had tucked a hockey puck under the desk of each student to defend themselves if an unfavorable situation arises.

In the video shared under the handle Carly (@crzachar), the teacher, Carly Zacharias asks her fellow educators if the issue has crossed their minds too.

"Hey, teachers! So if you’re just like me you’ve probably been doing a lot of thinking recently about your school safety," the woman was heard saying in the video. "I had these big windows along my back wall. My kids know that Plan A is always just to get out of that middle window and run across the street."

"But of course Plan B is barricade the door and fight, you all know this," the teacher said.

Zacharias said in the video the classroom window doesn't give a sense of security. She explained the door was made of wood with a giant glass window in the middle, which was not quite sturdy compared to the level of protection a class would need against an active shooter.

So, Zacharias took it upon herself to prepare her students. "What can I give every single student just something to prepare themselves?” she said in the video. "It can really hurt you. Especially 30."

Zacharias further explained she tucked the pucks under the desks because the children were fidgeting with them during the class. "That way kids can use them if they need them," Zacharias said. "Obviously it’s just a deterrent, but it definitely makes us feel a little bit better."

The teacher's plan to prepare a defense strategy has once again brought up the issue of America's troubled gun safety rules.

"America is a third world country with a Gucci belt," a user said in the comment section. "how is America real," said another.

"Teachers spending their own money so that students have something to throw at shooters. everything is fine," a person said. "Do non-Americans watch this kind of thing with shock and horror?" another commentator added.

"The way you said ‘you all know how it is’ scares me, in Europe I have never had to have a way to defend myself in school," a person said. "They replaced your door with a less safe option?! Ugh. This is a good idea though. Easier to throw than books or those heavy tape dispensers."

"We have to fight for a reality where we don’t need those hockey pucks [blue heart emoji]. Thank you for being so committed to protecting your students, sending love," said another with Zacharias liking the comment and responding "absolutely."

The video has since garnered 2 million views on the social media platform as of now.
