A 19-year-old girl was charged with murder Monday for brutally killing her friend at the latter's home. The incident happened in Malaysia.

The accused, identified as Siti Nur Athirah Azmi, and the victim, 19-year-old Siti Nur Surya Ismail, were former classmates and good friends.

On Nov. 1, Azmi visited Ismail's home and the two were "chit-chatting" when the victim allegedly mocked the accused. This angered Azmi. She picked up a knife and stabbed her friend several times.

"The suspect explained that she went to the victim's house only to chit-chat and while they were talking, she claimed that Siti Nur Surya Ismail talked condescendingly to the suspect, especially about the suspect's economic status and her looks. The angry suspect then attacked the victim," Terengganu police chief Datuk Roslee Chik told local daily Kosmo.

In order to make it look like a robbery, the accused stole several items, including cash and a mobile phone, and fled the scene.

The incident came to light when the victim's younger sister returned home from school and found the body, covered in blood, in the living room of the home. The sister then informed her father, who rushed back home from work. The body had several stab wounds and a severed wrist.

"Usually, Siti Nur Surya Ismail would fetch her sister from school but today (Nov.1) she did not do so and also did not answer the phone until my youngest child had to walk home. Upon reaching home, she called me to inform that her sister was lying in the living room, covered in blood," the victim's father, Ismail Muda, had told the Malaysian National News Agency.

Though police were initially investigating the incident as a case of robbery, they received some evidence that pointed to Azmi's role in the crime.

When Azmi was detained for questioning, she confessed to stabbing the victim to death. She appeared in court Monday and was charged with murder. Local reports stated that the accused could face death sentence if convicted. Investigation into the incident was ongoing.
