Texas gubernatorial candidate Robert "Beto" O'Rourke put his campaign on hold Sunday after going to Methodist Hospital in San Antonio with a bacterial infection.

O'Rourke, 49, said he began feeling sick on Friday. The Democrat had postponed campaign stops in Texas' Coastal Bend region. It is unclear when he plans to return to the campaign trail.

"The extraordinary team there — from custodians to nurses and doctors — gave me excellent care and attention, including IV antibiotics and rest," O'Rourke posted on Twitter.

"While my symptoms have improved, I will be resting at home in El Paso in accordance with the doctors' recommendations. I am sorry to have had to postpone events because of this but promise to be back on the road with you as soon as I am able," O'Rourke added.

O'Rourke, who ran a spirited but failed Senate campaign against Sen. Ted Cruz in 2018, is looking to unseat incumbent Republican Gov. Greg Abbott. Texas has not elected a Democrat to the governor's mansion since 1990.

Abbott leads O'Rourke by 7 percentage points, according to a recent poll from the Dallas Morning News and the University of Texas at Tyler.

While Abbott remains the favorite to win in November, O'Rourke has done a strong job of fundraising. O'Rourke raised $27.3 million from Feb. 20 to June 30, compared to Abbott's almost $25 million.

O'Rourke, who previously served as a U.S. House member from El Paso, has campaigned heavily on gun reform and increasing abortion access.
