UPDATE 5:30 p.m. EDT: This story has been updated to reflect conflicting statements about Petty's condition.

Singer Tom Petty was hospitalized in California Sunday after being found unconscious. The Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers frontman was not breathing and was in cardiac arrest when he arrived Sunday at UCLA Santa Monica Hospital. Petty reportedly had no brain activity and his life support was pulled Monday afternoon, according to TMZ.

The singer was still performing in the days leading up to his hospitalization and had just finished a tour at the Hollywood Bowl last week. His time as an artist made the Gainesville, Florida native famous for songs such as “American Girl” and “Free Fallin’.”

The 66-year-old had a reported net worth of $95 million at the time of his death, the result of record sales from his time in Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and as a solo artist, according to wealth estimator The Richest. Petty also made money from his time as an actor: He appeared in the 1997 film “The Postman” and voiced parts in animal series like “The Simpsons” and “King of the Hill.”

Petty sold more than 60 million albums during his 40-year career as a musician, according to Celebrity Net Worth. The singer received his own Hollywood Star in 1999 and was inducted in 2002 into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Petty announced in December that his musical career on the road was likely winding down. His recent tour to commemorate the band’s 40th anniversary was expected to be his “last big one,” he told Rolling Stone.

“We’re all on the backside of our 60’s,” he said. “I have a granddaughter now I’d like to see as much as I can. I don’t want to spend my life on the road. This tour will take me away for four months. With a little kid, that’s a lot of time.”
