Instagram, the place where the world celebrates all the big moments together, has passed on the crown for the most-liked post to someone new this year.

The social media platform has been dominated by the nail-biting excitement of the FIFA World Cup 2022, with half of the Instagram posts with the most likes coming from Argentine footballer Lionel Messi.

Here are the posts that got the highest number of likes on Instagram in 2022:

1. Lionel Messi

Taking the cup for the most-liked Instagram post ever is a carousel of images uploaded by Messi himself after Argentina's 2022 World Cup win.

The post has so far amassed 73.8 million likes and was even called "the most liked in Instagram history" by Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram.

2. @world_record_egg

An ordinary brown egg comes in at second place with 58.7 million likes on Instagram.

Uploaded in 2019, the picture was put up by an advertising executive in a quest to see if the egg could break the previous record held by a picture of Kylie Jenner and her baby Stormi that had 18 million likes, according to Augustman.

The egg dethroned the post and held the record for being the most-liked photo on the platform until Messi's post snatched the spot.

3. Lionel Messi

4. Cristiano Ronaldo

An advertisement for Louis Vuitton that was uploaded by Ronaldo takes the fourth spot on the list with 42.4 million likes. The picture shows both Ronaldo and Messi sitting on opposite sides of a chessboard.

Messi claims another spot on the list with a post featuring him and the coveted World Cup trophy. The photograph, which was taken inside an airplane, has racked up 41.4 million likes on his page.

Following Portugal's elimination from FIFA World Cup 2022, Ronaldo opened up on Instagram and gave his fans a heartfelt message about the loss.

"I fought hard for this dream," he wrote, according to the translation of the post, which has received 32.9 million likes and is currently occupying the seventh spot on the list.

8. Lionel Messi

When Messi uploaded the very same Louis Vuitton ad Ronaldo posted on his own page, 32.8 million Instagram users hit the like button. And because of that, the post is taking the No. 8 spot on the list.

9. Cristiano Ronaldo

The ninth spot is reserved for Ronaldo for a post he uploaded in October last year to announce that he and his wife were expecting twins. The photo has received 32.6 million likes.

10. Rapper XXXTentacion

The list ends with a photo uploaded by the rapper in 2018. XXXTentacion, also known as X, passed away on June 18, 2018, after being shot by two armed men multiple times. The post, which has earned 30.5 million likes, was the final one he made before he passed away.
