The busy lifestyle and the competitive world today have led many to lose sleep. Only a few can get the required R&R’s at night. Fortunately, a study has discovered one fruit that could very well help the body to get a good night’s sleep.

A report in Express revealed that a study conducted at Taipei Medical University discovered the sleep-inducing properties of kiwi. The study was carried out by the School of Nutrition and Health Sciences (SNHS).

According to SNHS, eating kiwifruits an hour before bedtime could help people sleep more quickly. The study was done over 4 weeks. Twenty-four adults participated and ate two kiwifruits approximately 1 hour before they go to bed.

The result of the study was promising. By the time it ended, the researchers had discovered that the participants were able to sleep quickly by 42% as compared to when they would not eat anything before going to bed.

The compound serotonin in kiwi was the reason pinpointed by the researchers behind the sleep responses of the participants. Serotonin is a chemical that is found in the brain. This chemical helps in regulating the sleep/wake cycle of the body. To enjoy the benefits of the same chemical that is naturally found in kiwi, the National Sleep Foundation suggested eating 2 servings of kiwi before bedtime.

It wasn’t only the quick manner that participants fell asleep that was observed. They also were able to increase their ability to sleep throughout the night without having to wake up in the middle of it. Sleeping time also increased by 13%.

Now, those with sleep problems are encouraged to eat at least 2 servings of kiwi before bedtime. Those suffering from insomnia can significantly benefit from eating this fruit before sleeping. It can give you an additional hour of sleep in a month.

Aside from kiwi, other great foods that must be consumed include berries, plums, and raisins. These contain antioxidants that could help combat the stress brought to the body because of sleep problems.

What the health body NHS recommends is for everyone to get between 6 and 9 hours of sleep. Regular exercise, listening to relaxation CDs, and avoiding the use of smartphones before bedtime could all contribute to giving you that excellent night time sleep.
