  • Several online users, including royal biographer Robert Jobson, agreed that Camilla deserves to be Queen Consort

The netizens have mixed opinions after Queen Elizabeth II announced her approval to make Camilla Parker Bowles "Queen Consort" when it is time for Prince Charles to take over the throne.

Her Majesty released a statement on the eve of her Accession Day. She acknowledged her family's "steadfast and loving support" and the people's continued loyalty and affection. She asked them to give the same support to Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla, and mentioned that the Duchess of Cornwall would be known as "Queen Consort when she continues her own loyal service."

Some were not on board with Her Majesty's decision because they were thinking of Princess Diana.

"The idea of Queen Camilla makes me deeply uneasy out of respect for Princess Diana," tweeted Dan Wootton, British journalist, broadcaster, and the executive editor of The Sun. "But I accept the Queen's verdict that royal status is earned through conduct and commitment to duty - Harry and Meghan should take note."

"I think the Queen has made an error of judgment. Charles and the monarchy were always going to be unpopular? The people tolerate Duchess of Cornwall and might accept Princess Consort, but Queen Camilla is several steps too far," another added.

"It's not so much about Diana as it is that the monarch is also the head of the Church of England. With Charles & Camilla's marital past it would be inappropriate for him to head it. Separate the Church or abdicate to William," Beatrice Cardenas wrote.

Meanwhile, several netizens also agreed that Camilla deserves the title. Even some of Princess Diana's fans approved of the Duchess of Cornwall being Queen Consort.

"@danwootton I hear you. But not to give Camilla her rightful title as the legal wife of a king would dilute his status as king and the status of the monarchy. Camilla has served Queen and Country for 17 years now. She has to be Queen Consort. Princess Consort would be a cop out," replied royal biographer Robert Jobson, author of "Prince Philip's Century: The Extraordinary Life of the Duke."

"I would've agreed with that years ago. We loved and love Princess Diana. Camilla has shown herself worthy to be queen one day should that be the natural course. The Queen sees that and knows that — and we love our Queen," another netizen who supported Her Majesty's decision wrote.

"It is Camilla's right to be called Queen (and I'm a huge Diana fan)," a different user added.

Prince Charles released a statement congratulating Queen Elizabeth II for her 70th anniversary as monarch. He also said he was "deeply conscious" of the Queen's decision to honor his "darling wife" to be Queen Consort.

"As we have sought together to serve and support Her Majesty and the people of our communities, my darling wife has been my own steadfast support throughout," Prince Charles wrote.
