President Donald Trump took to Twitter Thursday, like he’s done nearly every day since he was elected president, and this time he tweeted about a “witch hunt.” The president claimed people were out to get him, saying that the country faced the greats hunt in American history, but Twitter users couldn’t help but point that the Salem witch trials were actually the worst witch hunt, literally, in American history.

“You are witnessing the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history — led by some very bad and conflicted people! #MAGA,” he tweeted. For those who might not know, “MAGA” stands for his (in)famous slogan, “Make American Great Again.” Within hours, the president’s post was liked more than 57,000 times and shared more than 17,000 times by his 32.2 million followers.

Soon after, “WITCH HUNT,” in all capitals, became a top-trending Twitter topic Thursday. It amassed nearly 24,000 tweets at the time this article was written.

Trump didn’t say who was leading the witch hunt, but he was probably referring the to “fake news media,” democrats in congress, ousted FBI director James Comey and former FBI director Robert Mueller.

Mueller is investigating the alleged connections between the Trump campaign and Russia. Trump wasn’t pleased about being investigated for obstruction of justice. “They made up a phony collusion with the Russians story, found zero proof, so now they go for obstruction of justice on the phony story. Nice,” Trump tweeted.

While Trump is apparently consumed with himself, he neglected to address that the Salem witch hunts were the worst in American history.

From 1692 to 1693, more than 200 people were accused of practicing witch craft, also known as the Devil’s magic, in colonial Massachusetts. Of those 200 accused, 20 were executed. More than 300 years later, we now know that none of the people put to death were guilty. The colony admitted that the mass hysteria and subsequent trials were a mistake. Since then, the Salem witch trials have gone down in history about how dangerous paranoia can be.

At the time, people were afraid of the power the Devil had. They thought he could give power to people if they were devoted to him. The craze started in Europe, where tens of thousands of people, mostly women, were killed.

“I think there are some witches in Salem & accused Communists from the 1950s who would like to have a word w/ you about the words WITCH HUNT,” one twitter user wrote. “Actually, the Witch hunt in Salem Massachusetts was probably the largest Witch hunt in history,” another said.
