U.S. stocks finished mostly flat on Tuesday in a slow session in which data showed more stabilization in the economy, while Apple Inc hit a record high, lifting the Nasdaq Composite on reports it is developing a new iPhone.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> gained 11.56 points, or 0.11 percent, to close unofficially at 10,907.42. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> edged up 0.05 point to end unofficially at 1,173.27, unchanged percentage-wise. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> gained 6.33 points, or 0.26 percent, to close unofficially at 2,410.69.
