On “The Tonight Show” hosted by Jimmy Fallon, Matthew McConaughey talked about why he declined to run for Governor of Texas after lots of speculation of a potential run by the famous actor.

“The category of politics came up, and it’s a privileged one that I gave great consideration to, but at this point in my life, with . . . the life I’m living right now, the storytelling I want to keep doing. It’s not the category for me at this point in my life,” McConaughey said on the show.

McConaughey, 52, a native Texan, mentioned family and his own outlook on life as a reason for deciding not to run but did not shy away from running in the future. When Fallon asked about ruling out any future runs for political offices or lawmaking roles, McConaughey said “I’m not [ruling it out] until I am.”

“[Texas is] a great state,” he added.

He originally voiced his consideration to run for Governor of Texas on “The Hugh Hewitt Show.”

When he announced his decision to not run, he said “ I'm not interested in going and putting a bunch of Band-Aids on that are going to be ripped off as soon as I'm out, I'm interested in building something that can last and I'm measuring what category that is, I don't know if that's politics.”

“We lead by serving each other. We lead through our service,” he said, and it is clear that as of right now politics is not where he thinks he can bring the most change. Previously, he said that Texas and the U.S. as a whole needs a governor who is “aggressively centric.”
