Also known as the winter vomiting bug, norovirus is causing mayhem in many counties and cities across the UK. According to a report last week, there are now 60 schools in the North of England that reported having staff and pupils getting sick with the virus.

Norovirus is extremely contagious. It can quickly spread when you come into close contact with someone who is already affected by the virus. You can also get infected by touching objects, foods, and surfaces that have norovirus on them.

The virus causes unpleasant symptoms, which include diarrhea and vomiting. So which parts of the UK have been hit by norovirus so far, and what can be done to prevent its spread?

Some of the counties in England that already reported norovirus outbreak are Bristol, Cheshire, Cornwall, Devon, Greater London, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Staffordshire, Tyne and Wear, Warwickshire, and Yorkshire.

Several people in Bristol are reported to have been struck down by the virus after watching a Lego brick show. A couple of businesses, schools, and hospitals in the area have also been reported to be affected.

Two wards of Crewe’s Leighton Hospital in Cheshire were closed to visitors, and new admissions after some of their patients showed symptoms of being infected. A ward at the Royal Cornwall Hospital was closed after a norovirus outbreak was reported.

During the first week of November, in the North Devon District Hospital, a ward was also closed, and the entire staff was put on red alert. A norovirus outbreak in Whitby forced Queen Elizabeth Hospital officials to restrict visiting on some of its wards.

A school in Greater Manchester, the Cheadle Hulme School, shut down its junior buildings after a deep clean was advised by Public Health England. Last September in Lancashire, 50 pupils, and staff of the Carnforth North Road Primary School were taken ill after a suspected outbreak of the norovirus. In Lincolnshire, The Stamford School Sports Centre Memorial Pool was shut down after someone who was reported to be infected with the norovirus used its facilities.
