Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip did not help Prince Charles and Princess Diana fix their marriage immediately.

The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh didn’t want the Prince and Princess of Wales to separate. However, it was already too late when they decided to intervene in Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s troubled marriage.

According to Penny Junor in her 2015 book “The Firm,” when Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip called the future king and his then-wife for a meeting to salvage their marriage, the move was already long overdue. Princess Diana already announced that she wanted a trial separation. When the senior couple called the Prince and Princess of Wales for another meeting to discuss the matter again, Princess Diana didn’t show up.

According to Junor, there was a reason why Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip didn’t act immediately on their son’s troubled marriage. They were not sure if the couple would welcome their help.

“Parents of any couple having difficulties in their marriage would be naturally reticent reticent about intervening, uncertain as to whether help would be welcome,” Junor wrote.

However, she believed that they should have done it earlier regardless because Prince Charles and Princess Diana “wasn’t any couple.” Unlike other couples, their marriage would affect the monarchy.

“The breakdown of this marriage had huge implications for the monarchy, and yet both the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh had held back and chosen not to get involved,” Junor added.

Junor stressed how Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s marriage made headlines. A lot was said about their relationship. It wasn’t a secret that both of them were leading separate lives and were seeing different set of friends.

The Queen and Prince Philip were sympathetic but didn’t agree with the couple’s split. However, eventually, Queen Elizabeth II decided that the couple should divorce, to Princess Diana’s dismay. The People’s Princess didn’t have any plans to divorce her royal husband.

According to Princess Diana’s friend Jenni Rivett, Prince William and Prince Harry’s mom was not the one who wanted separation and divorce. What she wanted was to be the Princess of Wales and the queen of people’s hearts. She also wanted to be a good mother and wife.
