A 30-year-old Jamaican woman who married a 74-year-old man from New York for U.S. citizenship attempted to kill him after she found out her plan might fail. The woman admitted to her crime in court Monday.

Westchester County District Attorney Miriam Rocah said that Olivia Raimo pleaded guilty to second-degree attempted murder. She will be sentenced to 15 years in state prison, with five years of post-release supervision, per the plea agreement, states Patch.

The incident occurred on Jan. 24, 2020, when the woman pushed her husband between a toilet seat and a wall, in their New Rochelle home. She then slit his wrist with a straight razor, reports WJBF.

The victim’s health aide, who arrived during the assault, was denied entry into the home by the woman, but since the aide didn't recognize Raimo, she called the New Rochelle Police Department.

When the cops arrived, they heard the man screaming from inside the bathroom. He was immediately rushed to Jacobi Hospital in the Bronx, where he underwent two surgeries to reattach the tendons in his arm, but he lost all function in his hand due to the attack.

According to authorities, Raimo got married to the older man in 2017. The two of them then met with an attorney so they could prepare for an interview with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services to prove that their marriage was legitimate. However, during the meeting, they were informed that they would have a hard time passing their marriage interview.

This provoked Raimo into attacking her husband, authorities added. She was arrested by the New Rochelle police on Feb. 11, 2020, following an investigation.

“Violent acts are particularly heinous when they target the elderly,” Rocah said. “My office will continue to work with our partners in law enforcement to pursue justice for all vulnerable victims of crime.”

Raimo is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 13, 2021.
