For the longest time, it has been the men donning superhero costumes and saving the world. But “Wonder Woman” is going to change all that this year. Director Patty Jenkins’ film is all about female empowerment, and her lead star Gal Gadot, who plays the titular character, also stands up for feminism and gender equality.

Jenkins told Sci-Fi Now that she is hopeful that “Wonder Woman” would open more doors for female-led movies. “If it succeeds, it will make an impact. Obviously, I hope the film is super successful, and therefore I hope that becomes something people believe in. I think that I’m not the only person who’s fighting that battle,” Jenkins said.

The filmmaker knows there have been tons of successful movies already with empowering female leads, but “Wonder Woman” is going to be a new precedent because Diana Prince is the only woman in the Justice League. “Things like ‘The Hunger Games’ have already made a huge impact, and I think they helped open the door for us. It’s finally saying: ‘Look, there are people making these things with female leads that doesn’t become a chicks’ film! It becomes a film for both genders!’ and so other people have opened the door, but I certainly hope that in the superhero genre this will change things,” she said.

Whatever the case, it seems like Jenkins is already certain of the movie’s success because she has already come up with an idea for its sequel. Since the origin movie focused more on the past, she would love to take the heroine into the present and have her deal with modern-day issues.

“I’m excited for her to come to America and become the Wonder Woman we are all familiar with from having grown up around her as an American superhero,” Jenkins told the Sun. “I’d like to bring her a little farther along into the future and have a fun, exciting storyline that is its own thing. ‘Wonder Woman’ 1 is so much about her becoming the person she is. I can’t wait to spring forward with who she is and have another great standalone superhero film.”

She added that it has been a great privilege handling the origin story of Diana, princess of the Amazons, since she has always been a huge fan of origin stories. “Also, there was the fact that no one had done her story and the fact that I love her. So it was a treasure trove of potential,” she said.

Jenkins was also thrilled with the prospect of working with Gadot, since she believes the actress is the true embodiment of the character. When the studio was first casting for the role, Jenkins was apprehensive that it would go to somebody undeserving. But when she found out it went to Gadot, she released a huge sigh of relief.

“Oh my God, they couldn't have found anybody better in the whole wide world. Just look at Gal Gadot when she smiles or when she meets somebody and shakes their hand. That is the embodiment of Wonder Woman. She is so beautiful and powerful, but kind and generous and thoughtful. She's just an amazing person,” she told Empire.

“Wonder Woman” will be released on June 2.
