After the Season 6 finale of “The 100” last night, there’s officially only one season of the post-apocalyptic CW series left.

The announcement of next year’s Season 7 as the show’s final season arrived on Sunday when creator Jason Rothenberg shared the “bittersweet news” on Twitter.

“Season 7 will be our last,” he wrote. “We are eternally grateful to WB & CW for always allowing us to tell our story the way we want to & to wrap the show on our terms. What an incredible ride this has been!”

This last season of “The 100,” which stars Eliza Taylor (Clarke) and Bob Morley (Bellamy), will have 16 episodes, the most since Season 3, which also contained 16 episodes, bringing the final episode count for the series to 100 episodes.

Although this isn’t as many episodes as some other CW shows, like “Arrow” and “Supernatural,” which are also both ending next season, are getting, Rothenberg told International Business Times at New York Comic Con last year that he never wanted “The 100” to necessarily go on for that long.

At the time, while promoting Season 6 of the series and prior to the show getting renewed for its seventh and final season, the creator opened up about whether or not he envisioned Book 2, which started with Season 6, to be about the same length as Book 1, which was five seasons.

While he shared that “it could last five years” because of how much he loved exploring this new planet and what happened to the Eligius III colonists, he also said that “that’s a long time to be on one show.”

Rothenberg continued: “It’s hard to keep the quality as high as I feel like we have. The crew is great. The cast is amazing. The writers have been great. Everybody’s doing their best work right now. But, at some point, you start to repeat yourself, and I don’t want to be in that situation.”

In the end, he revealed that he never considered “The 100” to be “one of those shows that’s meant for like a ‘Supernatural’-type run.”

As it turns out, he was right.

“Supernatural” will end after its 15th season next year, while “The 100” will have its own “The 100”-type run and end after seven seasons and a very fitting 100 episodes.

A premiere date for the final season has not yet been revealed, but “The 100” will once again air during The CW’s midseason schedule. Until then, the first five seasons are currently streaming on Netflix, and Season 6 will be added to the service next week.
