The “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Season 6 trailer revealed that Coulson died, but actor Clark Gregg is still around. The star teased that his new role is very different on the ABC drama.

“The Coulson role and persona, though always evolving and always having new parts of him revealed to me by our writers became a very familiar skin in a way,” Gregg told Marvel.com. “And to kind of change all of that and find myself playing this other very mysterious person, who is not Phil Coulson, and the mystery of who that person is and why he looks like that is something that they’ve done groundbreaking, wild stuff with that I’m really lucky to play.”

In the “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Season 6 trailer, the title cards clarify that Agent Coulson is dead after his Ghost Rider deal. However, in the last moments, someone tells Gregg’s character that he is from S.H.I.E.L.D. “Never heard of it,” he replies.

Gregg said it was “very strange” to return to his show as a new character and also remarked that he just can’t seem to really die in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“Every time I think I’m out they drag me back in. They used to say I’m the glue of the Marvel Universe. I now think he’s the cockroach of the Marvel Universe,” he joked. “The whole thing can go down. There can be snaps, whatever. He’s just not killable, apparently. He’s just still gonna be around.”

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” returns to ABC this summer. Season 6 does not have an official premiere date yet.
