Scott and Brooke on "The Amazing Race"
What do the winners of "The Amazing Race," like Season 29 champs Scott Flanary and Brooke Camhi, actually take home from the competition? Michele Crowe/CBS

Several fans of “The Amazing Race” were stunned when Brooke Camhi and Scott Flanary crossed the finish line first and won $1 million on the Season 29 finale. Now, in a post-race interview, the two are discussing just how they managed to make things work well enough to become official champions.

After the two were officially crowned winners of “The Amazing Race” on the June 1 finale, Brooke and Scott sat down with Entertainment Weekly to discuss just how they managed to surprise everyone watching and become the team that won it all in the end.

Though the pair became known for their non-stop bickering on-camera, as well as Brooke’s continued complaining that she couldn’t complete any task that was thrown her way, they admit now that they knew they needed to take their negatives that everyone seemed to see and turn them into a more positive energy on the next leg.

“We might not hug it out on camera, but we knew how to power through that emotion and use that energy to complete tasks. And that’s what kept us going,” Scott said.

He also admitted that he realized quickly that their differences were bigger than he realized when he initially chose her to be his partner at the starting line.

“There was this energy about us when I first picked her and on our ride to LAX where I thought, ‘This is going to be great,’” he said. “...But I think when we got lost in Panama [in leg 1], and the way we reacted to that pressure was different. That’s when I started noticing there was going to be a difference in personalities. But what was great at the end of each leg, Brooke and I were like, ‘Look, this is what went wrong, we have got to reassess because we can’t win this if we spend all of our energy being negative with each other or fighting with each other.’”

Brooke also admitted that while she definitely wasn’t as prepared as she thought when it came to her physical shape going into the race, she knew that alliances with other teams—which they broke later on when needed—and seeming like a weaker team would be more beneficial to them as time went on, because it would put less of a target on their backs.

“I think our alliances and our social game and the fact that we did come across a bit weaker were actually helpful to us, especially in a season where people were so willing to use those U-turns on ‘the biggest threat,’” she said. “So I don’t think it’s necessarily a negative to have come across as needing a little help or being a little slower or weaker because we knew when it came to the mental game and the social game, we were very, very prepared to play that way.”

However, despite their admittance to being strategic with how they played the game, fans weren’t very thrilled over their beating both Tara and Joey and London and Logan in the final leg, mainly because of how often Brooke had complained or received help throughout the Season. Several took to social media to vent their frustrations, including demanding that Brooke share her prize money with other racers who helped her along the way, and praising Scott for dealing with her throughout the race.

While “The Amazing Race” is now off the air for the time-being, fans hopefully won’t have to wait too long for more of the show, While it isn’t on the fall schedule, CBS did renew it for a landmark 30th season, meaning new episodes will air on the network at some point soon.
