  • Amazon eyes the “God of War” TV adaptation for its Prime Video service
  • Amazon Studios will likely co-produce the live-action series
  • The project could intensify the competition between streamers

Amazon has set its sights on a TV series adaptation of the popular video game “God of War” for its Prime Video streaming service.

Sources exclusively revealed via Deadline Monday that the tech giant is currently in talks for a live-action TV show based on the very successful video game franchise.

Representatives for Sony and Amazon Studios did not respond when asked for comment.

But it’s worth mentioning that Amazon Studios has been aggressively building up its library of TV adaptations based on gaming IP.

The studio’s “Fallout” series starring Walton Goggins is coming soon. It also has a “Mass Effect” series adaptation in the works. Furthermore, the firm recently closed a first-look deal with dj2 Entertainment for another TV project.

Sources said the “God of War” live-action would come from “The Expanse” creators Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby and “The Wheel of Time” showrunner Rafe Judkins.

Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions are also said to be collaborating on the project just like what they are doing with other PlayStation games-inspired shows.

Should the “God of War” project land at Amazon, it would mark the latest big deal for a TV series based on a popular video game title, as per Variety.

It would also intensify the competition between streamers in this market. Netflix already has the “Resident Evil” live-action series, Paramount Plus has the upcoming “Halo,” while Peacock has ordered a series based on “Twisted Metal.”

“God of War,” the ancient mythology-themed franchise from Sony’s Santa Monica Studios, has released a total of seven games across four PlayStation consoles. The first game launched in 2005.

The earlier games centered on Kratos’ dangerous journey as he was eager to exact revenge on the Greek God of War Ares after killing his loved ones under the influence of the diety. The ex-Spartan warrior eventually became the God of War, and he found himself looking for a chance to start anew in life.

In 2018, Santa Monica Studios took the game in a new direction when it released a new installment for the PlayStation 4. In the game, Kratos got a second chance at fatherhood with his son Atreus after coming to the Norse wilds.

The news about the TV adaptation based on the franchise comes amid Sony’s work on an eighth installment, titled “God of War Ragnarok,” expected to drop later this year for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
