  • Lynne Spears has been largely uninvolved in Britney's conservatorship case

  • She revealed Britney and Jamie Spears' had a "toxic" relationship

Britney Spears' mother Lynne Spears has finally spoken out about her daughter's conservatorship battle and said she had mixed feelings about the matter and was in pain over the situation.

The 66-year-old mother of the pop singer always had concerns about Britney’s conservatorship but declined to answer detailed questions about the case, a new report by The New Yorker revealed. The outlet reported that at one point during an interview with Lynne in June, she had to speak to them “in a whisper” and apologize she might have to hang up abruptly, as other family members might walk in and discover she was talking to a reporter.

“I got mixed feelings about everything. I don’t know what to think. It’s a lot of pain, a lot of worry,” Lynne told The New Yorker.

“I’m good,” the outlet quoted her as saying “wryly.” “I’m good at deflecting.”

Lynne has been, for the most part, uninvolved in Britney’s conservatorship. However, a source told PEOPLE she decided to speak out on the issue after her daughter had “begged her for help.”

In November 2020, Lynne supported the pop singer’s request to remove her father, Jamie Spears, as her conservator. The mother of three, who divorced Jamie in 2002, reportedly told the judge through her lawyer that her ex-husband and Britney had a toxic relationship.

“Lynne feels there are a lot of concerns with the conservatorship,” the source told PEOPLE. “She feels Jamie has not been transparent with her and (she) is helping Britney as much as she can.”

Britney has been under legal conservatorship since 2008. In a fiery testimony at a Los Angeles court on June 23, the singer called her father “abusive” and accused him and his co-conservators of controlling her finances and personal life. She also accused them of controlling her reproductive decisions to the point of preventing her from having children.

Following her testimony, a representative for Jodi Montgomery, the conservator for Britney’s person, issued a statement to deny her claims. “Britney’s choice to marry and to start a family has never been impacted by the conservatorship while Ms. Montgomery has been conservator of the person,” lawyer LaurieAnn Wright told Page Six.
