KEY POINTS

  • Lifestyle choices are among the factors that contribute to an individual's longevity
  • Health experts have revealed that eating chilies can help increase the lifespan
  • The recommended frequency is at least four times a week

Science has shown that your lifespan is largely determined by the choices you make and is not subject to forces of nature. For instance, scientists have found out that consuming chilies four times a week can lower your risk of early death compared to those who completely avoid the spice.

A Protective Effect

In a study conducted by researchers from the Department of Epidemiology and Prevention of I.R.C.C.S. Neuromed in Pozzilli, Italy, they found a link between lower death risk and regular chili consumption. Their research also showed consuming the spice reduces the risk of all forms of heart deaths by 34%.

Dr. Marialaura Bonaccio, the study’s lead researcher, said protection from mortality risk was independent of the diet type that people follow. She explained, “In other words, someone can follow the healthy Mediterranean diet, someone else can eat less healthily, but for all of them, chili pepper has a protective effect."

A Fundamental Component

Another researcher noted that chili pepper is an essential component of food culture. Dr. Licia Iacoviello, a Professor of Hygiene and Public Health at the University of Insubria in Italy, revealed that for many centuries, the beneficial properties of all types of chili had been cited often in traditions or anecdotes. Today, researchers have established that different varieties of the capsicum or pepper can lend a protective action towards health.

Consumed In Different Ways

Chili is consumed in many different ways throughout the world. It is a staple in Mediterranean cuisine, considered one of the healthiest diets in the world. Indian, Mexican, and Thai cuisine also list chili as a major ingredient.

To fully enjoy its benefits, however, you have to make it a part of your regular, healthy, and balanced diet. Health experts say that a healthy and balanced diet must consist of fibrous and low-fat food. This means it must have at least five portions of vegetables and fruits, as well as whole grains.

Minimizing your salt intake to no more than six grams daily is also recommended. Consuming too much salt can increase your blood pressure, according to health experts. You should also avoid foods that contain saturated fats, as these can increase bad cholesterol levels in your blood.
