Social media users on Thursday took renewed interest in YouTube star David Dobrik's recent break from the Vlog Squad after new information was released about fellow member Jeff Wittek, who had sustained serious injuries on a video shoot.

On Sunday, Wittek began releasing “tell-all” videos sharing details about his life, and most recently, injuries while filming a video with Dobrik. Wittek released a video on Wednesday that showed he suffered an eye injury and broke his face and skull.

He noted that the incident took place in June 2020 when the Vlog Squad took a trip to Utah to film a stunt-themed video that began with skydiving, which had taken a dangerous turn.

The group drove an excavator into a shallow lake with Dobrik operating the machine. He then began swinging members in the air by a rope, but things took a turn when Wittek was on the contraption and Dobrik increased the speed.

In the video, Wittek can be seen flying toward the excavator and camera before he is later shown hanging by his foot with his head in the water as members of the squad scream and run towards him.

Following the release of the video, Dobrik’s name began trending on Twitter as fans began to accuse the star of misleading the public for claiming his hiatus was due to the pandemic.

“Spending half the pandemic thinking David Dobrik stopped his vlogs bc of COVID, but in reality he severely injured (probably almost k*lled) one of his good friends and managed to keep it all under wraps,” one user posted.

Another user noted that Dobrik and his associates didn’t seem concerned about stopping the spread amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“It’s sad that it makes more sense that David Dobrik only stopped vlogging because he almost killed a man and not because of covid. It wasn’t like their group was following the guidelines,” the post read.

The Vlog Squad has been the subject of other controversies, which were highlighted in a report by Vulture. In March, a woman named “Hannah” revealed she was raped in 2018 while filming with the Vlog Squad. The video was posted to Dobrik’s YouTube channel and later removed.

The woman claimed she blacked out and was not able to consent to a threesome with Dominykas Zeglaitis and another woman.

Although Dobrik posted an apology video, fans criticized him for not directly addressing Hannah’s allegations and disabling the comment section.

Dobrik has 18.4 million followers on YouTube.
