Candy contemplates about leaving the world of prostitution in the next episode of “The Deuce.”

According to the synopsis for Season 1, episode 5 of the HBO series, Candy (Maggie Gyllenhaal) mulls about retiring as a sex worker after she’s roughed up by a client.

While it’s unclear who this violent client is, the trailer for the episode reveals that Candy manages to escape from the said customer by using pepper spray on him. Sadly, Rodney (Method Mad) uses the unfortunate incident to try to convince Candy yet again to join the girls that work for him. “You keep expecting better, but you keep getting worse,” Rodney tells Candy. “ You go it alone. Come a dark hour, you are alone.”

Will Candy finally agree to have Rodney as her pimp? Or will the terrifying event push her to revisit her interest in filmmaking?

Meanwhile, Bobby (Chris Bauer) tries to change Vincent’s (James Franco) mind about Rudy’s (Michael Rispoli) latest offer. At the end of Season 1, episode 4, Rudy brought Vincent to an empty commercial space. While the mafia capo didn’t directly reveal his plans for the place, he sounded as if he wanted the barman to manage a new joint in the said location.

The trailer for the upcoming episode reveals that Vincent is not interested in Rudy’s offer. But because Vincent’s brother-in-law Bobby is convinced that the new business venture “could be a lot of money” for Vincent, Bobby tries his best to convince the Hi-Hat manager to rethink his decision.

Also in episode 5, Abby (Margarita Levieva) is disappointed when Darlene (Dominique Fishback) returns from a trip home with a new girl.

“How is Darlene going back home?” Abby asks a woman who seems to be related to Darlene in the trailer.

“She’s here. She came back with me,” replies the new girl in the city.

Why does Darlene bring a new girl to New York? Does she recruit a new girl so she can get away from her pimp Larry (Gbenga Akinnagbe)?

Elsewhere in the episode, Paul (Chris Coy) explores the exhilaration of gay life in the city, while journalist Sandra (Natalie Paul) scores a key interview with a pimp with some help from NYPD patrolman Alston (Lawrence Gilliard Jr.).

“The Deuce” Season 1, episode 5, titled “What Kind of Bad?” airs on Sunday, Oct. 8 at 9 p.m. EDT on HBO. Watch the trailer for the episode below:
