Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman was hospitalized after an out-of-control truck knocked him off his bicycle, throwing him onto the grassy edges near the Old Highway in Florida Keys, on Friday the 13th.

The accident occurred on that most ill-fated of dates (Friday the 13th) around 3 p.m local time. The accident left the veteran actor bruised and injured.

Hackman was immediately taken to a Miami hospital, with fears of having suffered internal injuries, particularly to his head, since he was cycling without a helmet.

The 81-year-old actor, fortunately, suffered minor injuries on his body and legs and was later discharged, following several hours of regular tests, his publicist, Susan Madore, told ABC News.

Hackman is widely known for his Oscar-winning performance as Detective Jimmy Popeye Doyle in the French Connection films of 1971 and 1975.

He also won a second Oscar (for Unforgiven in 1992), Golden Globe Awards and two BAFTAs during his successful career in Hollywood.
