'Hunger Games' Stage Play: Suzanne Collins Franchise Hits London Theater In 2016

Katniss Everdeen and crew will enter stage left for a live theatrical production of "The Hunger Games," Lionsgate announced Friday during an earnings call with analysts, reports Deadline. Lionsgate formed a partnership with live production company Imagine Nation and Triangular Entertainment to turn the mega-franchise into a play slated for a summer 2016 premiere on the London stage.

The stage production of “The Hunger Games” will be produced by award-winning Broadway producer Robin de Levita and U.K. promoter Harvey Goldsmith, and it follows Disney's success in turning its films such as "The Lion King, " "Beauty and the Beast," "The Little Mermaid" and "Aladdin" into live theater productions. A stage production of Disney's hit "Frozen" is currently in the works.

In de Levita’s Dutch production of "Soldier of Orange," the audience sat in a 360-degree rotating auditorium that turned from set to set, so it's likely "Hunger Games" theater audiences are in for a similar visual treat. A special theater will be constructed next to Wembley Stadium in London to mount the stage production of the wildly popular film.

“Robin de Levita and the entire production team are the perfect partners for extending 'The Hunger Games' franchise into a live theatrical experience,” said Lionsgate Chief Marketing Officer Tim Palen in a statement. “Their creative genius, combined with world-class production values and state-of-the-art technology will provide a uniquely immersive experience for fans around the world.”

"The Hunger Games: Mockingjay -- Part 1" will be released in cinemas worldwide on Nov. 21.
