A 15-year-old student succumbed to her injuries after being stabbed multiple times by an intruder on her California high school campus, district officials said.

The teenager, Aliycia Reynaga, was attacked at Stagg High School in Stockton on Monday at around 11 a.m. by a man trespassing the school grounds. Police said the assailant, identified as 52-year-old Anthony Gray of Stockton, parked his car at the front of the school and walked towards the victim before randomly stabbing her, according to CBS Sacramento.

Stockton Unified School District Superintendent John Ramirez Jr. confirmed at a press conference Monday that Aliycia was rushed to the hospital but did not make it.

"A trespasser entered the front of our school today, stabbed one of our students multiple times," said Ramirez Jr., as quoted by ABC News. "Unfortunately, she did not make it. The assailant was taken, was detained, and taken into custody immediately."

Officials said the assailant is not a parent and was detained shortly after he ambushed the teen.

"The school was also put on lockdown to assure the safety of the rest of our students," Ramirez went on to say. "We began to work with local law enforcement immediately and they've taken over the investigation."

Ramirez also appreciated the school's resource officer for quickly apprehending the suspect and stopping Gray from carrying on any further with his attack.

"When the incident happened, there were staff immediately there," he said at the conference. "It had been so quick that they weren't able to stop it, but they were there immediately."

Police told KCRA 3 that the stabbing was a "random act."

"It's a tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family," Ramirez said at the conference.

Stockton Mayor Kevin J. Lincoln also acknowledged the stabbing incident and reportedly said: “My heart is shattered by the violence that ended the life of a young student today. My deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victim. No child should ever have to experience or witness such senseless acts of violence. The safety and security of our students is of the utmost importance for the SUSD and the City of Stockton. We will work together to identify additional measures and resources promoting public safety and services for our students…”
