In the highly debated issue of "who has the president's ear," the tug of war for President Donald Trump’s influence has appeared to lean toward son-in-law Jared Kushner and eldest daughter Ivanka Trump.

With chief strategist Steve Bannon increasingly on the fringe and first lady Melania Trump mostly living in New York, Ivanka and Kushner are in considerable positions of influence, according to reports. This fact isn’t lost on “Last Week Tonight” host John Oliver, who outlined the importance of Trump's circle of trust.

"For liberals, the popular assumption is that Jared and Ivanka will be moderating influences," the British comedian said in a 22-minute diatribe. "Basically, if Trump is thinking about pressing a button labeled 'nuke Earth' they will—on behalf of all of us —guide his hand towards the button labeled, 'hey, maybe don't.'"

Oliver then shifted the focus specifically to the responsibilities taken on by Kushner, which include, but are not limited to, brokering peace in the Middle East, reforming the criminal justice system, running the Office of American Innovation and spearheading the efforts to solve the opioid crisis.

"It not unusual for powerful men to give their sons-in-law 'do-nothing' jobs. Leave it to Donald Trump—who can’t even get nepotism right—to give his a 'do-everything' job," quipped Oliver.

Also in the segment, Oliver discussed Ivanka’s relationship with her father and her influence in public policy, Kushner’s ability to follow through in his roles and whether the influence of the two is a welcome shift away from that of Bannon.
