“Marvel’s Jessica Jones” will sing its swan song later this year. Netflix announced Monday that the series has been canceled, officially cutting ties with Marvel Television.

Krysten Ritter stars as the titular superhero. She reacted to the news with a few behind-the-scenes photos of the cast on Instagram. She praised her co-workers and reminded fans that “Jessica Jones” Season 3, where she will make her directorial debut, is still on the way.

“Taken a few weeks back at the table read for our SERIES FINALE. I love these people to the moon and back,” Ritter wrote. “It has been a dream to play Jessica alongside my amazing cast and the best crew in the business for these past 5 years. I am so grateful for every second of it. We have THE BEST fans. You guys mean the world to me and I appreciate you beyond words. The final season of #JessicaJones is coming later this year and I am proud of how we complete JJ’s journey. I can’t wait for you all to see it. Stay tuned and more to come.”

“Jessica Jones” was one of the most critically acclaimed Marvel TV series in its first season, winning both a Peabody Award and an Emmy.

The cancellation wasn’t surprising, though. Netflix axed three Marvel series late last year, “Daredevil,” “Luke Cage” and “Iron Fist.” The cancellations of “Jessica Jones” as well as “The Punisher,” which was also announced Monday, were expected.

While nothing has been announced yet, it seems like Marvel Television is hoping to bring these characters back somehow. “More to come” was also the takeaway from executive producer Jeph Loeb’s letter to fans. The head of Marvel TV hinted he was already planning the return of the Defenders.

“Our Network partner may have decided they no longer want to continue telling the tales of these great characters... but you know Marvel better than that,” Loeb teased on Marvel.com. “As Matthew Murdock's Dad once said, ‘The measure of a man is not how he gets knocked to the mat, it's how he gets back up.’ To be continued...!”

However, reports last year indicated that the characters couldn’t return right away. The Netflix deal reportedly states that the Defenders heroes can’t appear in a non-Marvel show for two years after cancellation.
