Rep. Madison Cawthorn, R-N.C., was cited Tuesday for bringing a loaded gun to a Charlotte Douglas International Airport. The incident comes after an unloaded gun and a loaded magazine were found in Cawthorn's carry-on bag at Asheville Regional Airport on Feb. 13, 2021.

Cawthorn has not responded to requests for comment. He recently posted pro-gun comments on his Twitter account.

“Mr. Cawthorn stated that the firearm was his and he was cooperative with the CMPD officers,” the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department told WCNC Charlotte.

“Mr. Cawthorn was issued a citation for Possession of a Dangerous Weapon on City Property, which is a City of Charlotte Ordinance,” police added.

Cawthorn faces a misdemeanor of possessing a dangerous weapon on city property. He also faces potential civil penalties from TSA. The agencies rules state that any person who violates the weapons regulations at an airport could be fined up to about $13,000.

Cawthorn has been released from custody and police confiscated his loaded Staccato C2.

“The District Attorney’s Office will assess this case as it does any other, factoring in the strength of the evidence, safety risk to the community, and previous history of offenses by the defendant,” the Mecklenburg District Attorney’s Office said in a statement.

“Because this case is pending, in observance of the N.C. State Bar’s Rules of Professional Conduct, we will refrain from further comment,” the D.A.’s office said.

Cawthorn did not face criminal charges for the incident at the Asheville Regional Airport.

Cawthorn, 26, is considered among the more controversial members of the U.S. House of Representatives. In March, Cawthorn claimed that he was invited to sex parties and to use cocaine while in Washington.

His name was a trending topic Tuesday on Twitter.
