A man in India has been arrested for allegedly killing his fiancée with nitrogen gas a week before their wedding. He has also been accused of killing his previous wife.

The fiancée, Chupinderpal Kaur, 28, was about to get married to the accused, Navninderpreetpal, in two weeks when he allegedly killed her. Kaur came to Patiala in the Indian State of Punjab on Oct. 11 to shop for her wedding and was staying with the accused at his house.

But, a week before the wedding, the accused convinced Kaur to inhale nitrogen gas. He allegedly told her that the cylinder containing the gas had oxygen in it and convinced her that inhaling it would make "her face glow," according to India Today.

Kaur died of oxygen deprivation. Later, Navninderpreetpal dug a pit in his bedroom and buried her. After the crime, the suspect told the victim's family that she left the house in anger around midnight on Oct. 14.

"Depending on the dose of nitrogen inhaled, it can lead to full body paralysis to instant death," said Dr. RK Singal, head of Internal Medicine at BLK Super Specialty Hospital in Delhi to Hindustan Times. "In normal dose and under professional supervision, it is acceptable by the human body and doesn’t prove fatal. But when inhaled in excess, it can certainly knock down both our nervous and respiratory system, as the body gets deprived of oxygen," he explained.

According to the police, when they interviewed Navninderpreetpal about Kaur, they found evidence suggesting that he killed his first wife last month in a similar way.

The suspect’s previous wife, Sukhdeep, had moved to Patiala in 2009 to take a class for an exam. There she met the accused and married him in February 2018.

"She was allegedly killed by the accused when she was pregnant. Navninderpreet somehow managed to convince Sukhdeep’s parents that she had died due to a heart attack following which she was cremated," said Patiala police officer HS Bhullar to the Times of India.

"The accused said he killed both the women as he was feeling trapped. He has been remanded in police custody for six days and further investigation is underway," Bhullar added.
