A court in Spain sentenced a 28-year-old man to 15 years in prison Tuesday for brutally killing his mother and eating her body parts.

The police arrived at Alberto Gomez’s residence in Ventas in February 2019 after a family member raised concerns about the welfare of the victim, María Gómez. The accused, dubbed the "cannibal of Ventas" by local media, opened the door, but did not let the officers enter, El Pais reported.

When asked about his mother, he told them she was dead. The officers found human remains in the kitchen. While some parts of her body were found in a pot, the other in plastic containers in his fridge. Some of her organs were also found on the bed, Newshub reported.

The accused said he killed his mother "because she made his life impossible." He strangled her to death, dismembered her body using a carpenter’s saw, and ate the corpse "piece by piece." He also gave some pieces to his pet dog.

After killing the woman, the accused "transferred his mother’s body to the bedroom and put it on the bed with the aim of making her body disappear. To do that he cut her up using a carpenter’s saw and two kitchen knives. Once he had cut her body up he would eat bits of it from time to time over a period of around a fortnight, putting some of the parts of her body in Tupperware containers around the apartment and in the fridge and throwing others away in plastic bags," court records stated, New York Post reported.

During the trial, the accused said he has had psychological problems for years and that his life revolved around "drinking every day, smoking pot, and hearing voices." He also told the court he "saw hidden messages" when he watched television.

Sánchez told the court he suffered a "psychotic episode" when he killed the victim, a claim that was dismissed by the jury. Earlier this year, he was found guilty of the crime and, on Tuesday, he was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment.
