Giancarlo Esposito, who plays the role of Moff Gideon in the blockbuster TV series “The Mandalorian,” has revealed that the new season will explore the history of the Darksaber and its significance in the modern world.

Speaking in an interview with Deadline, Esposito shared some specific details about the weapon his character possesses on the show. The actor noted that people will be seeing “more” of the Darksaber in the upcoming season and they will also get to know about the weapon's history.

The “Better Call Saul” actor also explained that viewers will get all the minor details like where the saber came from and how it was revived.

“You will see more of the Darksaber, you will get an explanation of this ancient weapon to the modern world, a collapsed world. Where did this saber come from and how was it revived? It is a key in our second season, which will be back sooner than later,” Esposito said in the interview.

Later in the discussion, the 62-year-old star shared that the Darksaber is a significant part of his character’s past and tells a lot of things about him.

“(The saber) is a key to Moff Gideon’s (Esposito’s character) past, which possibly has a lot to do with where he comes from and his desire to build a planet and bring it back together,” Deadline quoted Esposito, as saying.

According to StarWars.com, the Darksaber was originally created by a Mandalorian/Jedi named Tarre Vizsla. However, the saber was stolen by other Mandalorians following Tarre’s death. The saber then fell into the hands of Darth Maul during “Star Wars: The Clone Wars.” Meanwhile, during “Star Wars Rebels,” the Darksaber was obtained by a Mandalorian known as Sabine Wren and Kanan Jarrus.

Wren gave the ancient weapon to Bo-Katan Kryze, who was the last person to have it before viewers got to see the weapon in the hands of Gideon.

Esposito is the only actor from the blockbuster series to receive a nomination at the 2020 Primetime Emmys. The star has been nominated in the Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series category and will be battling it out for the trophy against the likes of Andrew Scott (“Black Mirror”), James Cromwell (“Succession”), Martin Short (“The Morning Show”), Jason Bateman (“The Outsider), and Ron Cephas Jones (“This Is Us”).
