Amy Locane, star of the hit TV series “Melrose Place,” has been resentenced to eight years in prison in relation to a fatal 2010 DWI (driving while intoxicated) crash near Princeton, New Jersey, which killed a 60-year-old woman named Helene Seeman.

The 48-year-old television personality was ordered to spend eight more years behind bars by New Jersey Superior Court Judge Angela Borkowski, Associated Press reported. The actress has already served two and a half years in prison for the same accident. However, Judge Borkowski ruled that the previous sentence given to the star was too lenient.

The judge also determined that Locane has never taken full responsibility for the crash that killed a woman and severely injured her husband. Judge Borkowski also noted that Locane could have opted for a ride after drinking too much, but did not do so.

The judge informed Locane that if she “hadn’t gotten behind the wheel” of her car, the incident would never have happened.

“You made a conscious decision to drink that day and continued to drink, recognizing at the onset that you needed a ride, but didn’t obtain one. If you hadn’t gotten behind the wheel of your vehicle on this night, the incident never would have happened,” Associated Press quoted the judge as saying.

The verdict also means that Locane would have to spend at least four more years behind bars to become eligible for parole.

The ruling has completely “shocked” Locane’s attorney James Wronko. In a statement given to People, Wronko said that he is really “embarrassed” to be a part of the system that gave such a harsh punishment to someone who has “apologized” at the end of every proceeding.

“She has been out of prison for five years. She did everything they asked and went above and beyond. She's apologized at every sentencing proceeding,” People quoted Wronko, as saying.

The incident took place on June 27, 2010 in the Montgomery area of New Jersey. Locane was found to be driving 53 miles per hour in a 35-mile-per-hour zone. It was also revealed that Locane’s blood alcohol level was likely three times the legal level at the time of the incident, according to a previous report from the Associated Press.

In 2017, while speaking in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Locane said that she does not even remember how many drinks she had that day and only remember “bits and pieces” of the incident that happened after the consumption of alcohol.

“I can only remember the frame of mind I was in before it happened, and then bits and pieces. I don’t even recall how many I had,” Locane said.
